Question about owning car on ssi
« on: August 13, 2022, 05:07:21 pm »
I am so upset right now. My worker said it was ok that I had two cars. One she valued at 1,775 other a gift from my son as 300.  And with alittle money in bank took me over the 2,000 resource limit!   She included the first car.   Is this right??

One working car doesn't count towards resources when you're on SSI. The second car counts and is valued as a resource. However, the POMS seems to indicate that the SSA worker should have applied the one car exclusion to the more expensive car and then the other car would count as $300 in resources.

That said, SSI rules can be complex and maybe I am misunderstanding something here?

When a recipient or deemor own more than one automobile, apply the exclusion as follows:

a.  Apply the exclusion in the manner most advantageous to the recipient.

b.  Apply the total exclusion to the automobile with the greatest equity value if the eligible recipient or couple or deemors own more than one automobile used for transportation of the eligible recipient/couple or a member of the eligible recipient's or /couple's household.

Newdawn is correct. The highest value vehicle would be excluded as a resource. The second car would count as a resource.  Is $300 the blue book value or the value you listed ?
