This is embarrassing. I receive benefits for Bipolar 1. I am alo a recovering alcoholic, sober since 1986. Four years ago I had two back surgeries and I doubled up on the pain pills. I couldn't leave my house for three weeks, Not trying to make excuses. It was a pure and simple relapse and I'm so ashamed. I know SSDI doesn't cover addiction/alcoholism - I told my new therapist about it today. I get paranoid easily - would that relapse stop my benefit? please answer quikly.

No, you would be Bipolar even in the absence of a drug/alcohol abuse relapse so it won't affect your benefits. I can pretty confidently say that.

I agree with newdawn. In your case it does not matter. Do not be embarrassed about it. It sounds like the reason you doubled up on the pain pills was because of the pain. Back surgery can be very painful. If you were prescribed Norco aka Lortab aka Hydrocodone/Acetaminophen. Some doctors prescribe  two tablets at a time after painful surgeries. I am not trying to make light of your problem. I admire your honesty. But, don't be so hard on yourself, Sweetie

And it was 4 years ago for a short period of time.  And you are now sober again (which is a major accomplishment). 

When you get a CDR, they are only going to be looking at the past year or two.  Not 4+ years ago.  So, the fact that you are sober now shows it is unrelated to your disability
